Zodiac's 'Tail' of Triumph

When Zodiac was found in a park in September with majority of his tail violently torn away, he was terrified of the council rangers who came to help him.

Zodiac was brought to our shelter, where unbeknownst to him, he would receive life-saving care. At first, Zodiac didn’t trust anyone. His tail was shredded with exposed bones and nerves that were agonising to the touch. It was no wonder Zodiac wouldn’t let anyone come close.

Thanks to supporters who fund our work, Zodiac was put on pain relief and underwent emergency tail amputation surgery, which completely transformed him, not just physically, but behaviourally. Behind his suffering was a confident, loyal and loving pup. But that wasn't the end of Zodiac's rehabilitation journey.

At just 11-months-old, Zodiac had missed out on important formative training that is essential for day-to-day life in a home. He didn't how to walk on a lead, play with toys, interact with other dogs, meet new people, toilet outside or perform basic cues like sit or wait. It took countless hours with our animal care team, but today, Zodiac is a well-adjusted, confident dog ready to find his forever home, where he never has to feel confused or afraid ever again.

Zodiac’s tale may be one of triumph, but it reminds us of the thousands of pets like him who are yet to turn up at our door.

We need to raise $110,230 to continue transforming the lives of Sydney's lost, abandoned and neglected dogs and cats in the year ahead.

Please make your special Christmas gift today to help pets like Zodiac who need a miracle this Christmas and beyond.

"Zodiac was in a really bad way when he was found... He had part of his tail completely broken off and he was really distressed. We're not sure what's happened to him but he was a very, very scared dog."

- Dr Renae Jackson, SDCH Animal Care Manager

"Zodiac recovered really well; his wound healed beautifully.... Post-surgery, he's come out of his shell quite a lot. The pain certainly played a role in his unsure and fearful behaviour. With the staff here, he's really coming around."

- Dr Laura Taylor, SDCH Head Vet

"Zodiac’s progress has been outstanding. I could see the difference daily… Whenever he sees our staff he’s happy, his tail is wagging and he’s jumping on the door ready to greet us… And he’s learning really well."

- Fatima Asano, SDCH Animal Attendant.
